Architect: Filip Deslee

Less is more. Right?

In this article, we’ll talk about the splendid minimalist apartment in Mortsel, Belgium by Filip Deslee, Apartment 1418 and how to declutter your living space.

Minimalist design lacks the lavish details that define other styles, but the simplicity must be thoroughly planned to avoid looking simply empty. Minimalist apartments thrive when every element serves its function elegantly. If you are looking to create a space in a minimalist style, an interior designer or architect will surely craft the appropriate plan and exceed your expectations.

Minimalist living room colors

This simple design started with a strong color backbone: a scheme of black, white, and red. Deslee planned to use red sparingly and surrounded it with neutral materials to avoid overpowering the sparse pops of color, which bring energy and liveliness to the space.

The cozy fireplace also demands attention due to its generous square footage and stark black coloring among white walls and lovely hardwood. Custom backlighting highlights artwork and replaces the light lost to this monument. The oval coffee table and area rug subtly define the living room of this minimalist apartment, and are flanked by a black sofa and two bright accent chairs.

Minimalist apartment furniture

No minimalist apartment is complete without a sleek bank of kitchen cabinets. The lack of knobs and drawer pulls eliminates visual clutter and the juxtaposition of white cabinets with black countertops adds interest without disorder. A feature wall separates the living space from the kitchen. whitewashed, reclaimed wood surrounds the functional divider, while maintaining an effortless beauty. This allows for more workspace within the kitchen as well. Fresh plants and unique light fixtures throughout the apartment add character and ensure the space feels welcoming.

This minimalist apartment is not lacking function, alongside the public spaces sits a bedroom and a serene workspace. (see some beautiful minimalist black and white ideas as well!) The full-length custom shelving in the office space provide plenty of storage space for books, resources and displaying sentimental items. The built-in desk sports a black paint job, while the rest of the office is bright white. The large windows allow stimulating sunlight to flood the space.
